Apple Confirms: No Online iPhone 3G Sales, In-Store Activation Only
In response to BS Detector's comment as to a valid readon why the iPhone cannot be purchased through AT&T's website, I think the reason is very clear. Apple doesn't want unlocked 3G phones out there so they are more tightly controlling the buy/activation process. You can't buy an iPhone online because, if you were able to, Apple and AT&T would not be able to control what you did with it. With AT&T paying Apple something like a $300 subsidy on every phone, I think the company has the right to make sure that you use AT&T's service so that they can recoup the upfront loss they take in selling the phone at the subsidized price.

Apple Facing Serious Downside Risk - Morgan Keegan
"and what if Steve Jobs retires?" What kind of an inane comment is that? Steve Jobs will die in his office at Apple before he retires. Yes, Apple's value is tied to Steve Jobs health and presence, much the same that way Berkshire Hathaway is tied to Warren Buffet. However, there has been no-absolutely none-discussion of Jobs stepping down from Apple. This Morgan Keegan guy is another pundit who misses the point completely. I am beginning to believe that unless you have "embraced" Apple's culture, you cannot begin to understand the power of the brand. I try to be unemotional about my Apple shares, but I also own the products and know what a fulfilling experience it is to own a superior product that performs as it is designed to work.

Apple COO Cook Confirms Forecast for 10m iPhones Sold in 2008; Stock Jumps
I'll be interested to see how Toni Sacconaghi attempts to put negative spin on Cook's comments. He'll probably say something like Cook's comments about Apple not being wedded to any carrier is proof that iPhone sales are stagnating and that the co. is in real trouble. This 10 million phone figure has become a line in the sand. If they miss by 100,000 units, does that make the phone a flop? Of course not, but that's how it will be portrayed in the media. If they end up selling appreciably more than Sacconaghi's estimate of 7.9 million, he should pay for his irresponsible comments with his job because his terrible analysis contributed to the evaporation of about 50 billion dollars in Apple's market capitalization.
