Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know Newsby SA Editor Rachael Granby- Bank trio becomes duo. Wells Fargo (WFC) will become the largest U.S. bank by branches with its bid for Wachovia (WB), after Citigroup (C) withdrew from compromise negotiations late yesterday on concerns about the quality of some of Wachovia's assets. Wells Fargo, with a bid valued at $11.4B, expects the purchase to be completed by the end of the year, and denies it will have to absorb assets shakier than originally thought.
- Government considers next steps. As the financial crisis continues to worsen, the U.S. government is considering two dramatic steps to turn around, or at least slow, the damage: guaranteeing billions of dollars in bank debt and temporarily insuring all U.S. bank deposits. The moves, which would mark the government's most extensive intervention to date, are in discussion stages only.
- Credit stays frozen. As frozen credit markets refuse to thaw, the cost of default protection on corporate bonds reaches new global records amid investor concerns the credit crisis will trigger corporate failures as companies struggle to finance their businesses. Interbank lending remains limited, and borrowing from the Fed's expanded discount window continued its trend of setting new highs every week, as the total daily average rose to $420.2B vs. $367.8B last week.

Wednesday, October 15.Bullish Calls:Continental Resources (CLR) -- "This is a remarkable decline. All of the high quality ones are down so much, I can't go against it. This is where you pull the trigger.
3M (MMM) -- The moment this stock starts yielding 5%, I'm a buyer. Until then, keep your powder dry.Bearish Calls:Computer Sciences (CSC) -- This is a company that was going to be bought, but they passed up the chance. Now I don't want to buy it."Email continues...
Annaly Mortgage (NLY) -- I think this is a business model that needs to borrow money. Definitively do not buy."
Northrop Grumman (NOC) -- You can't own the defense stocks right now. If I had to own one, I'd look at Lockheed Martin (LMT) with its good dividend. - Stocks & Sectors -SampleSeeking Alpha - Stocks & SectorsInternet

Baidu: Silence is Not Golden, It's Poison
The Chinese gov may frown deeply and force goog to comply to some very harsh measures.
Goog may do better to suck it up and partner at least on some levels with domestic companies. They might need to tie in closely to avoid being pushed out.
This is just my perhaps dated view of dealing with china as a market leader.
What Should Google Do Next?
All I can say is WTF???? This is already an area where there is massive comp.
Billins of dollars are being spent competing in this area. It is setting up to be a battle Royale and this muppet of a blogger figures it is wide open.
Here is the big scary news google thinks it is ahead, the blogging fanboys think goog is ahead, but in fact they are running at least a lap down.
The big blue sky is wide open alright but it is not blue it is Azure.
Free TV Slams Media Companies
They did not have some huge tech lead, just good marketing and struck the right note with the punters.
Apple has no moat, other than branding, and branding is a weak moat at best. Sure the ipod is fun and the iphone cool , and apple is miking the public like a pumped up cow.
But I fail to see enough of a moat to buy into this stock. It is too easy for them to be beaten in each market seg.
Microsoft and eBay Team Up: Desperate or Brilliant?
MSFT and EBAY have offering from 7% to 35% since before the SUMMER!!!!!!
The 10% promo is also older than jesus. Wow next you will be telling us about a great new machine from apple called the Lisa.
Microsoft's Shift in Focus
But no facts to back it up. MSFT has 95% of the desktop market.
MSFT is doing stunningly well in IT. Five or six years ago punters and talking heads were still saying MSFT could not do back end servers etc. Today MSFT is raking in the cash as market share increases.
Office and Win is online and is one of the top five visted sites in the world.
Of course MSFT own 2 of the top five visted sites in the world but it does not make a good story so bloggers pretend not to know.
MSFT is having to put up with a media that loves to predict its decline about every 45 mins. Over the last 20 years people have claimed MSFT was on the way down , only to wake up the next day to hear MSFT earnings gain again.
(long goog msft and a host of others)
Google, Trust and Search Engine Censorship
Trust google to be trustworthy , no need to over sight or reg..
Just trust them as long as they cry a little here and there.
Microsoft Live Cashback Gets Glitchy in Traffic
I guess you were trying to get one of those cheap HP machines, and in your anger are looking to place blame on MS.
Apple vs. Microsoft Vista: The Ad Budget Wars
wake up kids, apple is a huge soul sucking corp just like dell msft citi google gm.
yes apple make nice things, but so do everyone else , it is all slices of the same pie.
Citigroup: The End Draws Near
Is iPhone Leading the Way in Smartphone Evolution?
Now can they compete and win three years from now, that is the real question. There are deep pockets out there, and they are not going to just bend over and smile.
Web 2.0 Innovation Not Dead
Good for you , managing to make a post out of nothing.
Microsoft Online Store May Drive Another Nail in Retail Coffin
MSFT not setting up this shop to compete with suppliers or to some how trick you.
They are simply making it easy for the odd punter who wishes to get a piece of software now and not bother going to the store.
They make the software and as such should not sell below MSRP. Or at least only do so for promos.
MSFT is not 10 years behind on this, they provide much of the tech people having been using to sell downloads for years, so again, think like a big boy.
It is a pretty small deal.
Do Google Docs and Spreadsheets Pose a Threat to Office?
So I am sure it is well balanced.
Do Google Docs and Spreadsheets Pose a Threat to Office?
The google annoucment was placed ahead of MSFTs just to try and steal its thunder.
Clearly it worked on you lot.
Goog has a great trick, but it is just the one trick.
